Who this is for
The pastor who gives everything and has nowhere to go with what it costs.
The leader whose strategy is solid but whose soul is running dry.
The church that is busy but knows something essential is missing.
If any of that sounds familiar, you are in the right place.
Who I Am
I currently serve as President and Publisher of the AME Sunday School Union and AMEC Publishing House, one of the oldest Black publishing institutions in America. Before this, I pastored churches in South Carolina, New York City, and Nashville. I earned degrees from Morehouse College, Union Theological Seminary, and Payne Theological Seminary. I have served on four continents.
But the credential that matters most is this: I have sat with leaders in the hardest seasons of their lives. I know what it costs to carry a congregation. I know what it feels like when the vision is clear but the person doing the work is depleted. I have been in that room, as the pastor and as the one who needed a pastor.
What I offer is not theory. It is counsel forged in real ministry, real conflict, real loss, and real renewal.
Every engagement begins the same way: with prayer and listening. What follows is shaped entirely by what you actually need, not by a program or a package.
For the leader who needs a trusted confidant. Someone who will listen without agenda, counsel without judgment, and pray with you through decisions that cannot be made in public. Private. Discreet. Pastoral.
Learn moreBurnout is not a scheduling problem. Stagnation is not a strategy problem. Both are formation problems. This work addresses the interior life that everything else depends on, through sustained engagement that makes change real and lasting.
Learn moreForty years of pulpit and pastoral authority. I preach and teach for worship services, conferences, denominational assemblies, and leadership retreats. Gatherings that need more than information delivered well.
Learn moreThe Hesed Formation Guide. The Hesed Leadership Framework. Written resources that go deeper than information, designed to shape how leaders think, pray, and practice over time.

Most mornings I sit with the lectionary, a notebook, and whatever God brings to mind. I write because I believe the leader who tends their own soul tends everything else better.
These are occasional writings shared openly. For the longer, more considered work, see From My Journal, a print publication available by subscription.
We are not singing glory to God’s name because God has finished what God is doing. This is an in-the-meantime praise.
December 7, 2025A reflection for the Second Sunday of Advent.
December 6, 2025A daily reflection rooted in the lectionary.

The deepest problems in our churches are not content problems. They are formation problems. Information alone does not change anyone. Practices do. Attention over time does. I wrote this five-week guide because transformation is possible and because leaders need something they can actually use.
“Hesed is not a strategy. It is a posture. The kind of love that stays when there is no reason to stay, that gives when there is no obligation to give.”
Five Weeks
There is something on this site for the leader who is depleted, the church that needs a voice, the family navigating something hard, and the person who simply needs a word today. Start wherever you are.

Pastor · Preacher · Publisher
Whatever you are carrying, your church, your leadership, your family, your own soul, there is someone here who has sat with all of it. For forty years. And who still believes prayer is where the work begins.
